A Family Fun Boat Tour Company runs private, captain guided boat tours out of IslaMarina at mile marker 85.9 bayside in Islamorada, just north of the Snake Creek Drawbridge. Every trip is booked as a private charter, so it is only your group and your U.S. Coast Guard certified captain on board. Tours are built around what you want to do, run seven days a week beginning at 8:30 a.m., with a two hour minimum and four hours being the length most guests choose.

Snorkeling trips head out to the coral patch reefs off Islamorada, part of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. Masks, fins, snorkels and swim noodles are included, instruction is offered for anyone trying it for the first time, and a floating safety line trails behind the boat to hold onto until you are ready to swim off on your own. If conditions on the reef are rough, the captain can switch to light snorkeling over a sunken boat or rock ledge, or turn toward the sandbar or the mangroves instead.

The Islamorada sandbar sits about half a mile offshore in the channel between Whale Harbor and Three Waters, off Windley and Upper Matecumbe Keys, shallow and warm enough to stand in while you swim, float, hunt for shells, and toss the frisbee and football the crew brings along. Eco tours and sightseeing runs follow the mangrove shorelines and backcountry islands around Windley Key, Upper and Lower Matecumbe, Tea Table Key and Indian Key, where your captain works through the history of the island along with the plant and animal life of the Upper Keys. Bottlenose dolphins, manatees, ospreys, herons, egrets, pelicans, frigate birds, ibis and bald eagles all turn up in these waters.

Sunset cruises take about two and a half hours, leaving roughly two hours before sundown for a slow run past mangrove islands and waterfront homes with island music on, and they can be combined with a sandbar stop or light snorkeling when the weather cooperates. Each boat carries up to six guests, and groups of up to twelve can be split across two boats with advance notice. A cooler is provided for whatever you bring aboard, reef safe sunscreen is required and spray sunscreen is not permitted, and pets are welcome. Reservations are taken by phone at 305-896-2915.
