Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1938, the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge spans approximately 200,000 acres of open water and islands from north of Marathon to north of Key West. It serves as a critical haven for over 250 bird species, including the great white heron, and provides essential nesting, feeding, and resting areas for various wildlife. Accessible only by boat, the refuge offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, kayaking, and fishing, with certain areas designated as Wildlife Management Areas to protect sensitive habitats.
