Hurricane Monument

Hurricane Monument

The Florida Keys Memorial, also known as the Hurricane Monument, honors the lives lost during the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, one of the deadliest storms in U.S. history. Constructed by the WPA in 1937, the monument features a sculpted tidal wave and palm relief, and houses the cremated remains of approximately 190 victims, including World War I veterans. Located at Mile Marker 81.5 in Islamorada, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
