JD Outdoor Adventures sits at 99150 Overseas Highway in Key Largo and keeps hours built around fishing rather than retail: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6 to 5 on Sunday. Live and frozen bait are the anchor, alongside tackle for everything from backcountry flats work to a run out to the reef.

The other half of the shop is boats. They carry Custom and Classic Gheenoes, SkimmerSkiff, Matecumbe Skiffs, Floyd Skiff Co. and Crescent Kayaks, a lineup pointed squarely at shallow water: poling skiffs and light hulls for the flats and the backcountry rather than anything built to go offshore. Outboards are part of it too.

The staff know the local water, which for a visitor with one morning to fish is the most valuable thing in the building. JD's also runs a second Key Largo store up the road at 104100 Overseas Highway with a marina, boat ramp and beach park, plus a store in Miami. Call (305) 735-4534.
