The Purple Cottage

The Purple Cottage is Jennifer Resor's Key West glass studio, working in both stained glass and fused glass. The two techniques do different things and she uses both: stained glass is cut, leaded and assembled so the light comes through the joins, while fused glass is layered and taken up to kiln temperature so the colors run into each other and the surface comes out smooth. Either way the piece is hand-made from the cut onward, which is why no two are identical even when the design repeats.

The palette is the one outside the window: the particular blues and greens of the water around Key West, and the hard bright light that makes them look like that. Glass is the right material for it, because unlike a painting a glass piece changes through the day as the sun moves across it.
