From REEF to Resilience
Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 9:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Explore the health and resilience of Florida’s coastal ecosystems during Florida Climate Week: From REEF to Resilience, a full day of citizen science, marine conservation, and community conversation at the REEF Ocean Exploration Center in Key Largo.
The day begins from 9:15 to 11 a.m. with a free Volunteer Fish Survey Project classroom session, where participants will learn REEF’s fish survey methodology and explore how long-term citizen science data can help scientists understand changes in coral reef ecosystems. Registration is required, and capacity is limited.
Participants can then put their new skills into practice during an optional Volunteer Fish Survey Project dive or snorkel, with check-in beginning at 1 p.m. and the excursion starting at 1:30 p.m. Participants will collect fish observations that can contribute to REEF’s citizen science database. Paid registration is required, capacity is limited, and attendance at the morning classroom session is required to participate in the afternoon dive or snorkel.
The evening begins with Community Networking from 5:15 to 6 p.m., featuring light food and refreshments and an opportunity to connect with REEF staff, volunteers, dive participants, and other community members. This portion of the event is free and open to the public.
From 6 to 7:30 p.m., the Ocean After Hours: From REEF to Resilience panel brings together marine scientists and conservation professionals for a conversation about resilience in Florida’s oceans. The discussion will explore pressures facing coastal ecosystems, how scientists monitor environmental changes, and how research, conservation, and community participation can contribute to healthier, more resilient marine environments. An audience Q&A follows the conversation, and the panel is free and open to the public.
All activities take place at the REEF Ocean Exploration Center, 98380 Overseas Highway at Mile Marker 98.3 in Key Largo, as part of Florida Climate Week.
