REEF Fish & Friends: Artificial Reefs in the Florida Keys

Tuesday, November 10, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. Discover how new underwater habitats are being developed in the Florida Keys during REEF Fish & Friends: Artificial Reefs in the Florida Keys at the REEF Ocean Exploration Center in Key Largo.

The evening features Dr. Hanna Koch, Director of Monroe County’s Artificial Reefs Program, who will share insights into the ongoing effort to develop a science-based and sustainable artificial reef program in the Florida Keys. Working with agencies including the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the program is exploring carefully designed structures that can enhance marine habitat while supporting the long-term health of Keys waters.

Artificial reefs can provide additional habitat and structural complexity for marine life, support fish communities, and potentially help reduce some recreational pressure on natural reefs. Koch will discuss the science, planning, partnerships, and conservation considerations involved in developing these underwater habitats.

The evening begins with a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m., featuring complimentary light refreshments and an opportunity to connect with fellow ocean enthusiasts. The presentation follows from 7 to 8 p.m.

Admission is free, and the seminar will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

The program takes place at the REEF Ocean Exploration Center, 98380 Overseas Highway at Mile Marker 98.3 in Key Largo.
