Zazoo Fine Art Gallery

Zazoo Fine Art Gallery

Zazoo Fine Art Gallery sits on upper Duval Street in Key West and deals in entertainment art, which in practice means the walls hold music history, film history and animation rather than seascapes. It is a different kind of gallery than most of what you will find on the island.

The owner and resident artist is Don Oriolo. His father, Joe Oriolo, took over the Felix the Cat comic strip in 1954 and held complete control of the character until his death in 1985. Don carried the franchise forward from there, is credited as Felix's designer beginning in 1984, voiced the character in English in 2000 and 2001, and brought Felix the Cat: The Movie to release in 1991 before selling the trademark and remaining copyrights to DreamWorks Animation in 2014. He is a painter, cartoonist and author, and he keeps an easel in the gallery, so there is a real chance of finding him working when you walk in.

The photography collection is the other reason to stop. It draws on the people who were in the room for a lot of twentieth century music and film: Bob Gruen, Terry O'Neill, Lynn Goldsmith, Baron Wolman, Elliott Landy, Daniel Kramer, Douglas Kirkland, Milton Greene, Bob Willoughby, Richard E. Aaron and Frank Worth, along with material from Getty Images, the Everett Collection and the MPTV Archives. Prints are sold in limited editions.

Beyond photography, the gallery represents Allison Lefcort, Ed Heck, Hugh Syme, Mike Chamberlin, Ray Drea, Stephen Holland, Ringo Starr, Sylvester Stallone and the John Lennon estate. The collectibles side carries animation art, original movie posters, antique maps, early aviation and space exploration pieces, signed baseball, basketball and boxing material, and RIAA awards. Jason Cornely runs the gallery as director.
