Key Deer Research and Response Team Volunteers

Key Deer Research and Response Team Volunteers

Help protect one of the Florida Keys’ most iconic residents by volunteering with the Key Deer Research and Response Team in partnership with the National Key Deer Refuge in the Lower Keys.

Found only in the Florida Keys, the endangered Key deer depends on protected habitat and ongoing conservation efforts for its survival. Volunteers have an opportunity to contribute directly to that work through field observations, data collection, public outreach, and response efforts involving local wildlife.

No special experience is required. On-the-job training is provided, making the program accessible to seasoned naturalists and newcomers alike. Volunteers can learn alongside those working to protect the species while helping researchers gather valuable information and educating the public about Key deer and their fragile island habitat.

Participation is flexible, allowing volunteers to contribute as much time as they are able, although consistent involvement is especially appreciated. Orientations are scheduled as needed when new volunteers join the team, with the next orientation planned for October.

For Lower Keys residents and nature lovers looking for a meaningful way to give back, volunteering offers a hands-on connection to the conservation of a species found nowhere else in the world.

Lend a hand, learn from those working in the field, and help safeguard the future of the beloved Key deer in the Florida Keys.
