250 Minutes for The Keys
Give Back to the Keys in 2026
Celebrate America’s 250th anniversary by leaving The Florida Keys better than you found them.
The Florida Keys have always inspired people to slow down, connect with nature, and appreciate the places that make America special. In honor of the nation’s 250th birthday, visitors and locals are invited to give a little time back to the islands through volunteer service, conservation projects, community support, and stewardship activities.
Whether you spend a few hours helping wildlife, joining a cleanup, supporting local history, or protecting our waters, every act of service helps preserve the Keys for future generations.
Take the 250-Minute Challenge
Give 250 minutes of your time in 2026 and be part of a destination-wide celebration of service.
Why 250 Minutes?
America is celebrating 250 years of history, community, and service. Here in The Florida Keys, we're marking the occasion with a simple challenge:
Give 250 minutes. Make a lasting impact.
That's just over four hours spent helping protect the environment, supporting local organizations, preserving cultural treasures, or strengthening our island communities.
Every minute counts. Every act matters.

Terry Helmers: Steward of Keys Volunteerism
Volunteer service has long been part of The Florida Keys story.
Key Largo resident Terry Helmers has logged hundreds of volunteer hours with The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and thousands more supporting cleanup efforts at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. His work has helped maintain mooring buoys that protect marine resources and remove debris from natural areas.
His message is simple:
"All of us have the power to protect and preserve the Keys."
Stories like Terry's remind us that even small actions can make a meaningful difference.
