Lobster Mini Season: Catch It, Cook It, Keys-Style
Lobster mini season in the Florida Keys has its own special buzz. Boats head out early, dive flags pop up across the blue, and everyone seems to be chasing the same dream: a legal-size lobster, a safe day on the water, and a dinner story that starts with, “You should have seen this one hiding under the ledge.”
This short sport season is a favorite for visitors and locals. It is exciting, but it also comes with important rules. Divers should be in good shape, check their gear before heading out, keep a measuring device with them, and follow lobster harvesting rules. The lobster’s carapace must be measured in the water, and the lobster must stay whole until after returning to shore. The Florida Keys also remind divers to protect the reef, avoid no-take zones, and enjoy the season in a safe, low-impact way.
Once the diving is done and the catch is back on land, the next adventure begins: finding the perfect place to cook it.
Key Largo
In Key Largo, mini season feels like a true Upper Keys adventure. This is a place where the day can start with clear water, coral reef views, and the thrill of peeking under rocky ledges for lobster. After the boat is rinsed and the gear is piled up, the reward is close by. Alfredo’s Cookhouse, Lazy Lobster Seafood Restaurant, The Buzzard’s Roost, The Catch Restaurant & Bar, and The Fish House all say yes to lobster cook/catch. Sharkey’s Sharkbite Grill also says yes, with one important note: the lobster must be cracked and off the shell before you bring it in. Key Largo makes the whole day feel easy, from the first splash to the last bite.
Islamorada
In Islamorada, lobster mini season comes with that famous “Sport Fishing Capital of the World” energy, even when the prize is hiding under the water instead of tugging on a line. The diving here can feel wide open and full of color, and the village has plenty of places to celebrate afterward. Chef Michael’s is a great choice for turning your catch into something special. Hungry Tarpon Restaurant at Robbie’s adds extra Keys character, since it is located at Robbie’s, one of Islamorada’s best-known visitor stops. Lazy Days Islamorada, Pierre’s and Beach Café at Morada Bay, Oceanview Inn & Sports Club, and Wahoo’s Seafood Bar and Grill also say yes, giving lobster hunters plenty of ways to end the day with sunset views, island flavor, and a plate they helped make possible.
Marathon
In Marathon, the Middle Keys bring a wonderfully laid-back mini season mood. The water, bridges, marinas, and island pace all make it feel like a natural base camp for a lobster outing. After a morning of diving, measuring, and maybe a little friendly bragging, Marathon has several spots ready to help with dinner. Frank’s Grill, Island Fish Company, Lazy Days South, and Sparky’s Landing - Fish n Cocktails all say yes to cooking your lobster catch. Angler & Ale at Hawks Cay is also on the list, making it a handy option for guests spending time around Duck Key. It is the kind of place where a salty day can turn into a relaxed meal without losing that on-the-water feeling.
Lower Keys
In the Lower Keys, mini season has a more tucked-away, wild-at-heart feel. The pace slows down, the views open up, and the day can feel like a true escape. This is where the quirky side of the Keys shines, and Lick It BBQ & Wood Fire Pizza fits right in. It says yes to lobster cook/catch, making it a fun and unexpected stop after a day of diving. Lobster and wood-fired flavor? That sounds like a mini season story worth telling twice.
Key West
By the time you reach Key West, lobster mini season turns into a full island celebration. The diving, the docks, the colorful streets, and the after-dark energy all come together. After a day on the water, there are many places to hand over your catch and let the kitchen take it from there. 7 Fish, Tavern N Town located at the Beachside Resort, Blue Heaven, Conch Republic Seafood Company, Dante’s Key West, Grand Café, Half Shell Raw Bar, Hogfish Bar & Grill, Kaya Island Eats, New York Pasta Garden, and One Duval at the Pier House Resort & Spa all say yes. Dorada and Four Marlins at Casa Marina Key West are also on the list. In Key West, the meal is not just dinner. It is the grand finale.
