Ocean After Hours- Research Presentation Night with Goshen College
Tuesday, November 17, 2026, 6:00 p.m.
Marine science students from Goshen College present the research they carried out during their internships in the Florida Keys. Each student speaks about their own project, what the fieldwork taught them, and how the experience shaped their interest in marine science and conservation.
The students are partway through Goshen’s Marine Biology Semester, a twelve-week residential program that runs from late September to early December. Students live at the college’s field station, take two courses, complete an internship with a local marine organization, and design and run an independent research project. The presentations at REEF come near the end of that cycle.
Goshen College has worked in the Keys since 1966, when its marine biology program began with trips to Pigeon Key. The college later moved to Long Key and built its current field station in the city of Layton at mile marker 68.5 in 1985, giving students direct access to mangrove estuaries, seagrass beds, mudflats, sponge reefs and coral reef. The station was named for J.N. Roth in 2009 and was repaired after damage from Hurricane Irma.
The evening is part of REEF’s Ocean After Hours series, which runs on Tuesdays when the Ocean Exploration Center extends its hours to 8 p.m. The center sits in the median at mile marker 98.3 in Key Largo, reached by Bahama Road, and general admission is free.
